Prefabricated Metal Animal Shelter in Michigan
Sunward Steel Buildings, Inc., was the fabricator and supplier of this preconstructed steel building in Lansing, Michigan, in March of 1998.
These days, the building functions as the Capital Area Humane Society, a local animal shelter that promotes the humane treatment of companion animals throughout Ingham, Eaton and Clifton counties through protection, placements and educational efforts. The facility can house up to 400 animals at any given time, and in 2018, CAHS helped place more than 10 animals in loving homes every day, with one animal finding a new family and home every 34 minutes during open hours.
Animal Shelter Facts & Figures
Designed with Michigan’s variable climate in mind, this pre-engineered steel animal shelter stands 81’x25’x9.6’/16.6’ in size, and it features top-of-the-line steel construction, providing a safe, secure place to house pets ahead of adoption. Originally White in color with a complementing White roof with a 3:12 pitch, the shelter now boasts a striking, Light Green exterior, and it offers considerable curb appeal with only minimal maintenance, requiring nothing more than a quick power wash on occasion to maintain its exterior appeal.
The metal animal shelter also boasts several features that help prevent moisture-related damage, among them 50 linear feet of eave gutter and 40 linear feet of downspouts. An 80-mph wind speed rating serves as an additional shelter characteristic; an accommodation made in adherence to the building code requirements in place across Lansing.
A Critical Resource for the Local Community
In addition to helping cats, dogs and other animals in need find loving homes, CAHS also offers spaying and neutering services for animals as well as foster programs, volunteer support services, behavioral classes and a community pet care clinic. In its first seven years in operation, CAHS performed more than 50,000 spay and neuter surgeries in an effort to reduce the number of animals across Michigan in need of new homes.
CAHS’s durable, sustainable steel facility is also inherently fire-resistant, which is important both because of the animals that live inside and because a fire already ripped through an earlier version if the shelter in the 1950s, causing considerable damage and hardship for animals and facility staff. Offering strength, durability and versatility, steel buildings made ideal animal shelters because of their affordability, easy customizability and damage-resistant nature.
